The Heart of the Wood is a magical story about Damian. Damian’s father has gone missing at sea. While on a trip, Damian is magically transported to Midwood Castle, where he meets Lady Rachel. Will his family be reunited? If you like middle-grade fantasy books like Percy Jackson, The Hobbit, and Narnia, you might want to pick up my book, The Heart of the Wood.
I chose to write middle-grade fantasy stories because I was happiest during that specific age. I was content, responsibilities weren’t paralyzing, and everything seemed more magical and colorful rather than mundane and realistic.
Reading fantasy allowed me to imagine an alternative existence from the one many are compelled to live—a life that can be both sad and joyful. But reading fantasy helped me take a deep dive into worlds of wonderful possibilities, where nothing was too unrealistic, unreasonable, or practical. It felt like walking through a door in a dream, where things that once seemed impossible suddenly became the norm.
I was inspired to write this story because I have always loved reading middle-grade books. As a child, I loved making up stories, often based on the people, places, and things I knew. As I grew older, I longed to write about things that were entirely imaginary, despite drawing inspiration from real-life experiences. Magical stories with fantastic creatures such as dragons, unicorns, goblins, fairies, and pixies always captured my imagination. I longed to weave these creatures into my stories because they offered a sense of adventure and possibility, which added depth and excitement to reality. While real life can be interesting at times, fantasy, at least for me, offers greater possibilities and creative freedom when writing for children. As a child, I always enjoyed reading stories filled with things I couldn’t experience in my own life or that no one on Earth could possibly encounter.
I don’t recall exactly how I got the idea for The Heart of the Wood, my debut middle-grade fantasy novel. I only remember a vivid scene that came to me involving a bike and a boy. As a kid, I dreaded riding a bicycle, but eventually, I mastered it—just like many children do. Riding a bicycle for the first time is a childhood milestone that many people remember, and that memory inspired me, unexpectedly blossoming into an entire story.
